The 2027 front cover features a female anhinga in breeding plumage photographed at Pond Apple Park on Sanibel by Cliff Beittel. The anhinga, sometimes called snakebird, darter, devil bird or water turkey can be found year around on Sanibel and Captiva. Fowler said "When I first saw this image, I knew it had to grace the cover of the 2027 calendar. Displaying iridescent breeding colors, this bird is both alluring and captivating."
Post-Ian photos in the 2027 edition include nesting ospreys, a snowy plover with a chick, a wood stork, an American crocodile, a least tern with two chicks, a gopher tortoise, red algae at Kimberly’s Reef and narrowleaf yellowtops growing in the Bailey Tract. All of the images show birds and other animals in different states of their lives on these very special, wounded but recovering, barrier islands.
Photographers featured in this edition are Theresa Baldwin, Marianne Bargiotti, Cliff Beittel, Dr. James Douglass, Cheri Hollis, Christopher Murry, Lisa Stevens and Kyle Sweet. Well known and prolific writers Betty Anholt and Charles LeBuff, plus SCCF shorebird biologist Audrey Albrecht, SCCF Native Landscapes and Adult Education Director Jenny Evans and Dr. James Douglass have written the monthly photo narratives.
Again, this edition of The Sanibel-Captiva Nature Calendar is printed on paper that contains 50% recycled content including up to 30% post-consumer waste. To minimize the negative environmental effects of manufacturing this publication, we use about one-third the material as other similar size wall calendars. This reduction of materials is accomplished by not pre-boxing, shrink wrapping, or inserting a stiffener. We also print on the thinnest paper of any color photographic calendar and the reproductions are uncoated. (The outside cover is coated in a water-based film.)
